VIT grading system and formulas
| Grade | S | A | B | C | D | E | F | N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade points | 10 | 9 | 8 | 7 | 6 | 5 | 0 | 0 |
GPA = total of (course credits x grade points) divided by total credits. CGPA = total of (semester GPA x semester credits) divided by total credits. Percentage = CGPA x 10.
Results are estimates for planning. Always confirm your final grades and CGPA with official VIT records.
Use this VIT CGPA calculator online to get your overall CGPA instantly from your semester GPA and credits. No account is needed. It also includes a GPA tab for marks and grades, and a CGPA to percentage tab for applications.
How Do You Calculate Your VIT CGPA Online?
VIT calculates CGPA using a credit-weighted average of the grade points earned across all completed semesters. Each course’s grade point is multiplied by its corresponding credit, and the total is divided by the sum of all credits.
Formula
Example
To use the quick VIT CGPA calculator semester wise:
Open the CGPA tab and add one row per completed semester.
Enter each semester GPA exactly as printed on your result, not a rounded guess.
Enter that semester’s total credits.
Press calculate and check the totals against your own arithmetic.
VIT CGPA Calculation – Worked Example
Let’s understand how to calculate VIT CGPA using a credit-weighted average.
Suppose a student has the following GPA and credits for three semesters:
Semester | GPA | Credits | Weighted Points |
| Semester 1 | 7.80 | 22 | 171.60 |
| Semester 2 | 8.20 | 24 | 196.80 |
| Semester 3 | 8.60 | 21 | 180.60 |
| Total | 67 | 549.00 |
Step 1: Calculate total weighted points.
171.60 + 196.80 + 180.60 = 549.00
Step 2: Calculate total credits.
22 + 24 + 21 = 67
Step 3: Apply the CGPA formula.
Why Does Credit Weighting Matter?
A simple average of the three GPAs is 8.20, while the credit-weighted CGPA is 8.19. This difference occurs because semesters with more credits have a greater influence on the overall CGPA. Credit weighting is particularly important when calculating your CGPA near an academic or placement cutoff.
VIT GPA Calculator: Semester GPA From Marks or Grades
Your VIT GPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points for one semester. VIT’s own documents call this GPA, though many students say SGPA. Use the GPA tab if you only have course grades or marks and no semester GPA yet. This is the VIT grade to CGPA calculator route: GPA first, then CGPA.
Enter each course’s credits and letter grade. The formula is Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ total credits for that semester.
Grade | Grade Point | Marks band (absolute grading) |
| S | 10 | 90 and Above |
| A | 9 | 80 to 89 |
| B | 8 | 70 to 79 |
| C | 7 | 60 to 69 |
| D | 6 | 50 to 59 |
| E | 5 | 50 to 54 |
| F | 0 | Below 50 |
These marks bands come from Table-6 of the FFCS Academic Regulations Version 4.0 (72nd Academic Council, 13 December 2023). They apply to labs, projects and theory classes of 10 students or fewer. Larger theory classes use relative grading based on the class average and standard deviation, so your cutoff can shift slightly.
Audit, Pass-Fail and Minor/Honour credits never count toward GPA or CGPA.
Do F and N Grades Change Your VIT CGPA?
Yes. An F or N grade earns zero grade points, but its credits still count in your total, so your CGPA stays lower until you clear the course through re-registration. A cleared backlog is not simply removed from the calculation, so clear arrears in the next available cycle.
VIT CGPA to Percentage Calculator
VIT converts CGPA to percentage by multiplying by 10, so the VIT CGPA to percentage calculator on Tab 3 simply applies Percentage = CGPA × 10. Use it with your overall CGPA from Tab 1
VIT CGPA | Percentage |
| 7.5 | 75% |
| 8.0 | 80% |
| 8.5 | 85% |
| 9.0 | 90% |
| 9.5 | 95% |
The ×10 rule is confirmed in Section 9.10 of the FFCS regulations and in a Controller of Examinations circular. Some recruiters outside Tamil Nadu still ask for the older UGC-style ×9.5 multiplier, so confirm what each employer or university wants before you submit. A semester-level GPA to percentage figure is only an estimate, because the official percentage is based on CGPA.
VIT CGPA Calculator for Vellore, VIT-AP, Chennai and Bhopal
This VIT CGPA calculator works as a CGPA calculator for VIT Vellore, VIT-AP (Amaravati), VIT Chennai and VIT Bhopal. All four campuses follow the same FFCS 10-point scale and the same credit-weighted formula, so you do not need a separate tool for each. The same applies across B.Tech M.Tech MBA and MCA, because only the credit distribution changes by course.
The calculator is for Vellore Institute of Technology students. If you study at another institute with “VIT” in its name, such as VIT Pune, check your own grading rules, because they may differ.
