Change the grade letters and points if your university uses a different scale. In Marks mode, the last column is the lowest marks that earn each grade. Defaults follow the common UGC 10-point scale.
SGPA formula and grade points
SGPA = Σ(credits × grade point) ÷ Σcredits
Multiply each subject’s credits by its grade point, add the results, and divide by the total credits of the semester. Subjects with 0 grade points still count in the credits.
| Grade | Meaning | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| O | Outstanding | 10 |
| A+ | Excellent | 9 |
| A | Very good | 8 |
| B+ | Good | 7 |
| B | Above average | 6 |
| C | Average | 5 |
| P | Pass | 4 |
| F | Fail | 0 |

SGPA vs CGPA at a Glance
Quick definitions
SGPA is your grade point average for one semester. CGPA is the average across all semesters completed so far.
Think of one as a chapter and the other as the whole book.

What Is SGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the average grade point a student earns across all subjects in a single semester.
SGPA full form and meaning
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. Each subject counts according to its credits, so a 4-credit paper moves your score more than a 2-credit lab.
What SGPA shows on your result
It appears at the end of each semester’s result. It shows how that term went, and it feeds into your CGPA later.
What Is CGPA?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall average of a student’s grade points across all completed semesters.
CGPA full form and meaning
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It reflects your overall performance from the first semester to the latest one.
Why CGPA matters for placements and higher studies
Recruiters often set a minimum CGPA for campus drives. Universities and scholarship panels check it too
Key Differences Between SGPA and CGPA
The main difference is scope. One covers a single semester, the other your whole course so far.
Both SGPA and CGPA use the same grade points, but they react differently. A rough semester can drag your SGPA down hard, yet it only nudges your CGPA. A great semester lifts the first quickly while the second creeps up.
How to Calculate SGPA
SGPA is calculated by multiplying each subject’s grade points by its credits, adding the results, and dividing by the total credits for that semester.
SGPA formula
SGPA = Σ (credits × grade point) ÷ Σ credits
Multiply each subject’s credits by its grade point, add the results, then divide by the semester’s total credits.
Worked example with credits and grade points
| Subject | Credits | Grade Points | Credits × grade point |
| Maths | 4 | 8 | 36 |
| Physics | 4 | 9 | 32 |
| Chemistry | 3 | 10 | 30 |
Total credit points: 137. Total credits: 16.
SGPA = 137 ÷ 16 = 8.56
How to Calculate CGPA from SGPA
When all semesters have equal credits
If credits are the same every semester, CGPA is a simple average. For scores of 8.5, 9.0, 8.0 and 9.5:
CGPA = (8.5 + 9.0 + 8.0 + 9.5) ÷ 4 = 8.75
When credits differ (weighted formula)
Many courses spread credits unevenly. A plain average isn’t accurate then, so use this:
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ semester credits
Worked example: simple vs weighted average
| Semester | SGPA | Credits |
| 1 | 8.50 | 20 |
| 2 | 9.20 | 26 |
| 3 | 8.00 | 22 |
Simple average: (8.50 + 9.20 + 8.00) ÷ 3 = 8.57
Weighted: 585.2 ÷ 68 = 8.61
The gap grows when credit loads vary more, so follow your university’s method.

How to Convert SGPA and CGPA to Percentage
Common conversion methods
The most common shortcut multiplies by 9.5.
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
A CGPA of 8.5 gives 80.75%.
Some universities use their own formula. VTU, for example, uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, which gives 77.5% for the same 8.5.
Why formulas vary by university
There’s no single national rule, and some universities treat SGPA and CGPA differently. The official method is what counts on certificates and applications, so check your university’s notification first.
10-Point Grading Scale Used in India
Most Indian universities follow a scale like this:
| Grade | Grade Point |
| O (Outstanding) | 10 |
| A+ | 9 |
| A | 8 |
| B+ | 7 |
| B | 6 |
| C | 5 |
| P (pass) | 4 |
| F (fail) | 0 |
Marks ranges behind each grade differ by university, so check your own table.
SGPA vs GPA vs CGPA
GPA is the general term. In the US it’s usually on a 4.0 scale and can mean a semester or an overall average.
Indian universities mostly use SGPA and CGPA on a 10-point scale. If you apply abroad, your marks are typically converted to the university’s GPA scale.
Which Matters More: SGPA or CGPA?
For placements, admissions and scholarships, CGPA matters more because it’s the number most people check.
Still, your SGPA and CGPA both deserve attention. The semester score shows your trend, and every one feeds into your cumulative average.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are SGPA and CGPA the same?
No. One covers a single semester, the other all completed semesters. They match only after the first semester.
Can SGPA be more than 10?
No. On a 10-point scale, 10 is the maximum. Some universities use other scales, so check yours.
What is a good SGPA or CGPA?
Many treat 7.5 and above as good, and 8.5 and above as excellent. Cutoffs vary by company and university.
Can I convert CGPA back to SGPA?
Not exactly, because CGPA is average. If you know the credits and every semester score but one, you can work out the missing one. The CGPA calculator helps you check.
