Most Indian universities use the 10-point scale with credits (SGPA for one semester, CGPA for all semesters). Grade tables and the percentage multiplier differ between universities, so check your own regulations. The percentage shown is only an approximation. Leave credits blank only if your university counts every subject equally.
Calculate Your Semester GPA Online
A GPA calculator gives you that number in seconds. This guide shows you how to use one, how the math works, and how Indian and international grading scales differ.
By the end, you’ll know how to work out your semester GPA, avoid common mistakes, and pick the right GPA calculator for your university.
Enter Your Courses, Credits and Grades
Start with your marksheet. Add one row for each subject and type in its credit value and your grade.
Most GPA calculators accept letter grades like A or B+, or grade points like 9 or 8.5. Use whichever your university prints.
Choose Your Grading Scale (4.0 or 10-Point)
Indian universities mostly use a 10-point scale. The US and many other countries use a 4.0 scale.
Pick the one that matches your marksheet. If you’re applying abroad, you’ll also need a separate conversion, because the two scales aren’t interchangeable.
With Credits or Without Credits
Credits tell the calculator how much each subject counts. A four-credit subject moves your GPA more than a one-credit lab.
If your university doesn’t use credits, leave them blank. Every subject then carries equal weight.
How to Calculate GPA
A common method is to calculate the average of your grade points, weighted by course credits.
GPA Formula
GPA = total of (credits × grade points) ÷ total credits
Multiply each subject’s credits by its grade points. Add those results together. Then divide by the total number of credits.
Worked Example on the 10-Point Scale
Say you took four subjects:
| Subjects | Grade Points | Credits |
| Maths | 8.0 | 4 |
| Physics | 9.0 | 3 |
| Programming | 10.0 | 3 |
| English | 7.0 | 2 |
Weighted points: 32 + 27 + 30 + 14 = 103. Total credits: 12.
GPA = 103 ÷ 12 = 8.58
Worked Example on the 4.0 Scale
| Subjects | Credits | Grade Points |
| Biology | 4 | 3.3 |
| Chemistry | 3 | 3.7 |
| History | 3 | 4.0 |
11.1 + 12.0 = 36.3. Total credits: 10.
GPA = 36.3 ÷ 10 = 3.63
A good GPA calculator does this arithmetic for you, so you can check your work.
Grade Point Tables
10-Point Scale (Indian Universities)
There’s no single national table. A common pattern looks like this: O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5 and F = 0.
Some universities use different letters or values, so always check your own regulations before you rely on a result.
4.0 Scale (US and International)
The 4.0 scale is more standard: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0.
Plus and minus grades sit in between, such as A- at 3.7 or B+ at 3.3.
GPA vs CGPA vs SGPA
What Is the Difference?
SGPA is your score for one semester. CGPA is your cumulative score across every semester so far.
Many universities just say GPA for the semester result, which can be confusing. Check what your marksheet calls each number.
When to Use Each
Use SGPA to see how a single term went. Use CGPA for placements, higher studies and scholarship forms.
CGPA is credit-weighted. Say your first-semester SGPA was 8.2 on 20 credits and your second was 8.8 on 22 credits. Your CGPA is (8.2 × 20 + 8.8 × 22) ÷ 42, which comes to 8.51.
How to Use This GPA Calculator
What Information You Need
Before you open the GPA calculator, keep your marksheet or grade card nearby. You’ll need each subject’s name, its credits, and the letter grade or grade point you earned.
For a cumulative score, use the CGPA calculator with your earlier semesters.
Retaken or Repeated Courses
Rules vary here. Some universities replace the old grade with the new one. Others count both attempts.
Check your regulations first, then enter the grades the way your university counts them.
GPA Calculator for Engineering Students
Engineering degrees pack in labs, projects and mixed credit values. A reliable GPA calculator needs to handle that.
Calculators by University (VIT, SRM, Anna University, KTU)
VIT, SRM, Anna University and KTU each publish their own grading rules. Grade letters, point values and credit weights can differ from one to the next.
That’s why a general GPA calculator gives you an estimate, while a university-specific one follows your exact table.
Why Grade Scales Differ Between Universities
Each university decides how marks map to grades. Some use relative grading, where your grade depends on how the class performed. Others use fixed mark ranges.
So the same 78 marks might earn different grades at two colleges.
