Most universities publish the rule as CGPA to percentage, so this calculator reverses it. Rules differ by university, scheme and admission year, and sources report some of them differently. Confirm with your latest official circular before you submit. For SPPU, AKTU, MAKAUT and others, which sources report differently, choose “Other university” and enter the formula from your circular.
How to Use the Percentage to CGPA Calculator
It takes under a minute.
- Enter your percentage. Decimals work too, like 79.6.
- Select your scale. Most Indian students need the 10-point scale.
- Pick the method your board or university follows.
- Read your CGPA.
Keep your marksheet open while you work. Use the exact percentage printed on it, not a rounded figure, because small differences can change the second decimal of your CGPA.
Choosing the Right Scale and Method
Look at your form or your university’s website first. It usually says how the CGPA should be calculated.
If nothing is stated, the CBSE method is the one most people quote. Use the simple method only for a rough estimate. And if you’re applying abroad, check whether the form wants a 10-point or a 4-point scale.
Not sure which one your institution expects? Email the admissions office or check last year’s admission notice. A two-minute check now can save you from a rejected form later.
Percentage to CGPA Conversion Formula
Two methods come up again and again in India.
Formula for the 10-Point Scale
CBSE method: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
Simple method: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 10
CBSE publishes the first rule for its own results. The second is easy to remember, but it gives a lower CGPA for the same marks.
Why the Formula Differs Between Universities
Each university sets its own conversion rule. VTU, SPPU and Mumbai University all have their own, and some change by programme or admission year.
So never assume one formula fits every institution. Check the official circular before you submit.
Two universities can convert the same marks into slightly different CGPA values. That gap can decide whether you clear an admission cutoff.
How to Convert Percentage to CGPA: Step-by-Step Examples
Here’s how both methods work on real numbers.
Example 1: 70% to CGPA
- CBSE method: 70 ÷ 9.5 = 7.37
- Simple method: 70 ÷ 10 = 7.0
Example 2: 80% to CGPA
- CBSE method: 80 ÷ 9.5 = 8.42
- Simple method: 80 ÷ 10 = 8.0
Example 3: A Decimal Percentage (79.6%)
- CBSE method: 79.6 ÷ 9.5 = 8.38
- Simple method: 79.6 ÷ 10 = 7.96
Notice the gap. At 80%, the two methods differ by about 0.4. That matters when a college or company sets a cutoff like 8.0 CGPA.
Charts rarely list decimals like 79.6, so a calculator saves time and avoids rounding mistakes.

Other Scales and Boards
Percentage to CGPA Out of 4
Some applications, especially for study abroad, ask for CGPA out of 4. That needs a different method, so don’t reuse your 10-point result. Check which scale your target university or evaluation service accepts.
There’s no single standard for this scale. Different universities and evaluation services follow their own tables, so ask which one applies before you convert.
CBSE Class 10 Percentage to CGPA
CBSE’s own rule uses the 9.5 multiplier, so the CBSE method above applies to its class 10 results. A diploma or B.Tech degree may follow a different rule, so confirm yours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the same formula used by every university?
No. Each university sets its own rule, and some use different formulas for different programme. Always follow the notice from your own institution.
How do I convert the percentage to CGPA out of 10?
Divide your percentage by 9.5 for the CBSE method, or by 10 for a quick estimate. For example, 80% gives 8.42 or 8.0
How do I convert CGPA back to percentage?
Reverse the CBSE method by multiplying your CGPA by 9.5. For example, 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%. Other universities use their own reverse formulas.
Will my university accept this conversion?
Not always. Many admission offices want the official conversion from your own college, so request it if the form needs one.
